Wednesday, Aug 19, 5 – 6:30 p.m.

Wear and tear of the joints can cause significant pain and, when left untreated, can lead to diminished quality of life. Timothy W. Gibson, M.D., medical director of the MemorialCare Joint Replacement Center at Orange Coast Medical Center, an orthopedic surgeon with Huntington Beach Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, will discuss advances in diagnosis and Mako® robotic-arm surgery as a treatment option for knee and hip joint replacement. Silent Reflux: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Options (Zoom Session)

Silent reflux, also known as laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), is a condition in which stomach acid causes throat discomfort, usually behind the breastbone in the middle of the trunk. Please join Atif Iqbal, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.S.M.B.S., medical director of the Digestive Care Center at Orange Coast Medical Center, to learn more about the causes, symptoms and treatment options for this condition. Sepsis 911: A Survival Guide to Save Lives

According to Sepsis Alliance, sepsis kills 258,000 Americans every year. Sepsis is the body’s overwhelming and life-threatening response to infection which can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. Vice Chairman of the Emergency Department, Tuan Nguyen, M.D., and Clinical Quality Analyst, Jennifer Castro, M.S.N., RN, will explain the symptoms, stages and prevention of sepsis.

Physical and Speech Therapy Services

Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation

Physical therapists incorporate specialized training to identify and treat problems specific to the vestibular and balance systems. Dizziness, vertigo, imbalance and falls will be assessed and treated accordingly with vestibular and balance exercises and activities. Mitchell Tsurudome, P.T., discusses balance and vestibular disorders, advances in physical therapy, and program offerings at Orange Coast in his podcast “Vestibular Disorders.”

Cognitive Therapy Services

Cognitive therapy addresses difficulties with thinking (attention, planning, organizing) and memory. Individuals with early onset dementia, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury and post chemotherapy patients all benefit from cognitive therapy. Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program

The Orange Coast Medical Center Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program will help people with chronic lung disease gain better control of their breathing and improve their overall quality of life. Our staff will work in partnership with you to evaluate your abilities and develop an individualized treatment and exercise plan. Orange Coast Medical Center has a team specializing in pulmonary rehabilitation. The team provides intensive exercise, education, self-management training and psychosocial support under the medical direction of a board-certified pulmonologist (lung specialist). Bereavement Support Group

This support group provides a safe environment to help individuals who are grieving due to the loss of a loved one. You will have the opportunity to discuss and share feelings and emotions surrounding your loss, explore healthy coping strategies and self-care, and receive support from others. For additional information and assistance, please contact Sarah Wuu, M.S.W., L.C.S.W., at (714) 378-7146.

Better Breathers Club
Wednesday, Aug 19, Noon – 1 p.m.

This virtual support group is for people with chronic lung disease and helps people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other lung diseases, such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The group brings members together to learn skills to help manage their condition and improve their quality of life, based on the American Lung Association guidelines.
Loved ones are also welcomed to attend. Registration is required.

This four-week series prepares the expectant mother and her partner for the laboring process, pain management options, hospital procedures, breathing and relaxation, cesarean birth and postpartum.

Parkinson's Support

Virtual Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery (PWR!) and LOUD Crowd® (Zoom Session)

Orange Coast Medical Center’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Department offers evidence- based, clinically proven, physical and speech therapy by licensed therapists certified in the Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery (PWR!) and Parkinson’s Voice Project (SPEAK OUT!®) techniques. Steps Forward – A Parkinson’s Disease Exercise Class (Zoom Session)

Screenings and Prevention

CT Lung Cancer Screening

Orange Coast Medical Center offers a low-dose CT lung screening that may detect disease early, when treatment may be more successful. By using computed tomography (CT), physicians are able to see and detect abnormalities in the lungs as small as a grain of rice. To schedule a screening, please call (714) 378-7650.


Criteria for screening (Must meet all three):

  • Age between 55-77 years old

  • Have smoked one pack per day for 30 years or longer

  • Currently smoking or have quit within the last 15 years

As we age, we can lose our balance over the slightest things. Mitchell Tsurudome, P.T., and Casey Jackson, P.T., physical therapists with Outpatient Rehabilitation at Orange Coast Medical Center, will discuss practical ways to improve balance and help prevent falls. Registration is required.

Five Wishes® Advance Directive (Zoom Session)
Thursday, Aug 20, 3 – 4:30 p.m.

You have the right to make decisions regarding the medical care you prefer if you are unable to speak for yourself. An Orange Coast Medical Center representative will join us to discuss the importance of having an advance care plan and explain what an advance directive is (and isn’t). Complimentary Five Wishes® advance directives will be mailed to registered participants. Registration is required.

 

MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center

The MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center is an Accredited Comprehensive Center, designated by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). Surgical Weight Loss Support Group 
(Zoom Session)
Select Tuesdays, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Support meetings for patients who have undergone surgical intervention for treatment of clinically severe obesity. Any individual who is considering having weight-loss surgery is also welcome. Meetings are conducted by a clinical psychologist. Meetings will not be held on holidays.
